The Early Career section represents the young members of the Swiss Society for Microbiology and has a representing member in the SSM committee. Created in 2019, our section is active on several levels:
- Organization of specific Early Career sessions during the SSM annual meetings. As an example, we held two sessions in 2022, one called Microbiologists of Tomorrow (concept: microbiologists from different field sharing career advice in an interactive session) and the other called the Journal Club Challenge (concept: The participants selected a paper from their field that had had an impact on their research (ideally a paper published over the past 2 years). The challenge was to present it in 5 minutes in the most captivating way. Each talk was followed by a short time of questions & answers to make it interactive. The award for the best presentation was CHF 300.-).
- Increasing the presence of the society in social media such as Twitter and LinkedIn (@SwissMicrobe & #SSM, respectively).
- Developing the networking of young members of the society by collaborating, participating and actively promoting other events dedicated to Early Career.
- Increasing the accessibility to the European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) activities for trainees. Many clinical microbiologists in training are not aware of the activities that are organized by the ESCMID. These are usually great opportunities at improving particular set of skills. To tackle this issue, we are also developing a Swiss network for clinical microbiologists in training who are willing to receive the updates about the trainee activities.
Our section is of course open to new thoughts, ideas or projects you may have. Do not hesitate to share them. If you are a young member willing to participate to the organization of the society’s activities, contact us as well!
