A word from the President

Dear members,

This is my last letter as president of the SSM. In normal times I would have simply wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2022 and to thank you for your confidence and support for the past three years. Although this is still something I want to do, I cannot ignore our current situation. In the middle of another COVID wave, I have to go back and reflect about the last three years.

Being president of the SSM has been a great honor and pleasure to me. However, it has also been a very challenging task. I never expected that during my tenure so many difficult decisions would have to be made and that I would witness so many changes. Some of those changes are positive and reflect our resilience, endeavor, and strengths. Some others are negative and highlight inequality, fear, and ignorance.

I do hope that we will emerge one day from this crisis stronger and at a better place to take advantage of our collaborative efforts to tackle the other pressing issues that have been under the radar because of COVID. We should not forget that climate change, antibiotic resistance, food production, and science’s skepticism are all there floating over our heads and threatening our future.

I still believe that being part of a society as the SSM is the right move forward. In these past four year as member of the committee I have learnt so much. I have also created so many new friendships and connections that I still feel positive about the future. In difficult times taking decisions alone does not bring you too far. Taking decisions as part of a group of people with different backgrounds, interest, and knowledge, forces you to make better choices. I am certain this will be one of the major strengths of the society for the future and I hope that we all as members will be part of this common intelligence.

ISME18 - Lausanne 2022 (14^th – 19^th Aug)

The International Symposium on Microbial Ecology, an event that gathers around 2000 international scientists and is organized normally every two years, will for the first time be organized in Switzerland. It will take place at the SwissTech Convention Center STCC. We hope that the large community of microbial ecology researchers working at Swiss research institutions will actively participate in this important conference.

SSM Annual Meeting 2022- Lausanne (30^th Aug-1^st Sept)

As you probably know by now, the year 2022 is a special year for the SSM as the society will celebrate its 80^th anniversary. The first Annual Assembly of SSM was held in Lausanne in the year 1942. The 80^th Annual Assembly will again be in Lausanne, namely at the SwissTech Convention Center STCC. It is organized by Gilbert Greub, Christof Holliger and Pilar Junier.

The motto of the special event is “Celebrating Swiss Microbiology Research”. The different contributions will mainly come from researchers working at a Swiss research institution and from Swiss citizens working at a research institution abroad. We will also have special sessions highlighting the different research programs of national importance, namely the two NCCRs Antiresist and Microbiomes, and the two NRPs 72 and 78.

In case SSM members have creative ideas how to celebrate the SSM 80^th anniversary, please share them by mail with secretary@swissmicrobiology.ch.

Also, as informed during a recent mail to all members, we are seeking for candidacies for the SSM Encouragement Award and the more recently created SSM PhD award. The SSM Encouragement Award is given to young investigators in the field of microbiology for achievements that are outstanding in terms of their originality and particular scientific value. The SSM PhD award distinguishes outstanding PhDs obtained in the field of microbiology and carried out in Switzerland or in close collaboration with Switzerland.

Applications for the Award can be submitted by any member of the Society and self-applications are possible.

The deadline for the application is February 14th 2022 at noon. For enquiries and submissions please contact: secretary@swissmicrobiology.ch.

Rigi Workshop 2022 “Cell Biology of Infection”

More than 30 student participants have registered for the RIGI workshop "Cell Biology of Infection", co-organized by the SSM (Hubert Hilbi) and LS2 (Urs Greber). The workshop will take place from January 30th to February 1st, 2022, and the Federal Council's Corona regulations in effect at that time will be strictly enforced.

SSM Committee Open positions

The current President Elect Prof. Jacques Schrenzel will be SSM president from 2022- 2024: a new President Elect is to be designated.

As mentioned the past months, the Lay Communication section is temporarily lead by Prof. Gilbert Greub. New candidates are welcome to apply to take over.

Applications for both positions are to be secretary@swissmicrobiology.ch before June, 1^st 2022.

SSM Grants Rules

For a better understanding of scientific activities support, the article 7 of the Grant Rule is completed as follow:

Participation in scientific events – SGM-SSM Travel grants

(Current version) Art. 7 The applicant must have prepared a scientific contribution for the relevant scientific event, which the organiser has accepted for oral or poster presentation

Modification (New version) Art. 7 The applicant must have prepared a scientific activity such as:

7.1. A scientific contribution for the relevant scientific event, which the organiser has accepted for oral or poster presentation

7.2. A scientific exchange activity compatible with the activities of the SSM

The new version will be uploaded on SSM website.

Student membership:

Since January 2021, a new student membership category is available at the SSM. If you are already a member, just send us a copy of your student card and that is all you need to benefit from it. If you are not a member, please apply for membership and don’t forget to select the “student” category https://swissmicrobiology.ch/en/society/membership/become-a-member.

Your membership is an entry into a network of professionals working in diverse fields in Microbiology in Switzerland. It allows you also to apply for our different financial support tools, and it open additional doors with international associations to which SSM is a full member.
